ROASTED CHESTNUTS (CASTANHAS ASSADAS)

We recently celebrated "Magusto" here in Portugal. On November 11th to be more precise. The "Magusto" is the essential Portuguese and Galician autumn pagan origin festival and coincides with the celebration of São Martinho (Saint Martin of Tours or Saint Martin's Day), who is a patron saint of France.

This festival is celebrated by eating roasted chestnuts, which happens to be my husband's favourite thing to eat this time of the year as we get closer to Christmas and the days get darker and it starts to get chilly. Every single day he literally begs me to make them for him. 😅

Saint Martin's Day is actually also celebrated in my homeland Sweden, in the southern province of Skåne. There they celebrate with a formal dinner called "Gåsamiddag", which means Goose Dinner. Supposedly because Saint Martin hid among goose when the town of Tours tried to make him a bishop. Long story... Anyhow, the dinner starts off with a "black soup" (made of goose blood!😱), then main course is goose and for dessert a special, traditional apple cake is served... Except for the apple cake, I think I prefer to celebrate with the roasted chestnuts. 🌰🌰🌰 And I think you do too! 😂

Enjoy! 💗Helena
